The Importance of Vitamins for Children

Vitamins are just important to children as they are to adults and senior adults. Children do not always like the vegetables that are good for them and high in nutrients, so a good multivitamin is a good supplement to their regular diet.

Vitamins are substances our body needs to work right. Our children need vitamins to help them grow, have healthy eyes, and build strong bones. They also need vitamins to fight infections, heal wounds, and help their blood to clot. Vitamins will also help them fight infections, diseases, and reduce the risk of cancer. Children need vitamins to keep their teeth strong and healthy and like adults, they can’t produce enough to meet their needs. They need outside help because of their diet, environmental issues, and unhealthy eating habits. Children will be children, they will often not eat the foods that are the healthiest for them no matter how hard you try. Children will naturally prefer a fast-food meal to a healthy, nutritional meal with vegetables and fruit. Most adults would too!

In fact, the fat food business is now in the process of adding healthier food choices to their menus because so many of us are too busy to plan or cook nutritional meals anymore. It is even more critical for children who are still growing to have balanced meals or supplements to their diet. One interesting note: The CEO’s of both McDonalds and Wendy’s both died of heart attacks!

Children go through stages in their life when they are picky about what they will eat. Sometimes children do not want to eat at all, and that is a challenge for parents. Kids may be so engrossed in whatever activity they are involved in, they don’t want to stop and take the time to eat. Add that to their resistance to eating vegetables and you have a diet that is not sufficient in vitamins.

Even if we do take the time to cook a meal at home, the foods we serve have been processed and often do not contain many vitamins. Even our fruits and vegetables are affected. The agricultural processes that we have minimize vitamin and mineral contents.

It is recommended to parents that when a child begins eating solid food, at six months, they also should be given vitamins by the age of one. Parents find it is often easier for them to give their child liquid multivitamins instead of pills. If you are breast feeding or giving your child formula, they often have enough vitamins and minerals. It may be necessary for children who do not get exposure to sunlight, be given supplemental vitamin D before earlier.

Toddlers and preschoolers are often choosy about which foods they will eat. They will need supplemental vitamins. As they grow, their tastes will change and usually will start eating a more balanced diet. It’s important your child receives the nutrients needed to be sure they have normal development and growth.

Multivitamins for children are not very expensive but worth it for your children.
